358 days

358 days

Barrelman early bird registration is open. Debating if I want to commit early and save $50 or so. I should likely wait until I have my 2nd year schedule, but I will request that weekend off-call regardless. I haven't committed to a race that far in advance since I signed up for the 2015 IM Musoka.

Overall, things are feeling slightly better. Ran 4.7K this morning, broken down as 4 - 6 - 8 -4.
Trying to build up my endurance over long periods. Last time I probably jumped too quickly into speed, although things were feeling better. Going to bike tomorrow again.

Hoping that I can actually get in the pool soon. I have my tattoo appointment Oct 11, so with 2 weeks to heal I can hopefully get in the 2nd last week of October. That gives me another 3-4 weeks to strengthen up the shoulder.

Maybe my shoulder is getting better?

Barrelman - 361 days

Had physio check up on Tuesday. I originally was seeing him for my back and sciatic pain but now the focus has switched to my shoulder and Achilles. Overall it went well and he cleared me to start some exercises. Still have a ways to go before swimming, but I'm hoping that it's possible within 4-6 weeks.

Update: 359 days
Overall, feeling physically healthier this week. Unable to really train much due to time limitations, but did manage a bike ride this morning, about 20K in 40 min. That was definitely the first time in a while I've done an "easy" 20K ride and fairly decent afterwards. Hoping to build up to 30K before it gets too cold and I have to move inside.

I walk/ran a broken 4K on Tuesday, first time in over a week. Achilles was probably about 65%. Will run again on Saturday.

Training: 6/10
Physical health: 6/10

About ?363 days until Barrelman 2020

It's about 363 days until Barrelman (roughly). I looked at the 2020 Calendar and I suspect that Sept 20, 2020 will be the date of the race. I also think that 2020 is a leap year?

Here is where my training stands: Yesterday I did a trail run with Crystal about 3.5K. It was a nice run. My Achilles was feeling probably a 6/10. Wasn't bothered by running, but it felt okay. Glad to get out for the first run in about 8 days though.

This morning I woke up a bit sore, probably from doing like 6 hours of house work + run yesterday. I decided to go for an easy bike ride since I was off in the morning, and the weather was reasonably nice. I'm trying to keep riding outside until at least October, although I suspect once it gets cooler I'll have to shift indoors. I really don't like riding in the rain. Today I did 14K in 30 min, at a relatively easy pace (roughly 80% of FTP - 200W).

Tomorrow going to try to run again and will likely keep it easy.

My shoulder is still a mess, but I feel like maybe it's getting better. Tried some external/internal band exercises this morning.

A year of injuries - now 365 days until Barrelman 2020

I haven't written anything in over a year. It's been a tough go in regards to injuries. Everything started post Road2Hope in 2017, around Nov/Dec with some left glute pain. In hindsight, this was likely my sciatic nerve acting up. It led to my left leg tightening up, all the way to my Achilles. In February 2018 while training for Around the Bay my left Achilles went on me, a recurrence of an injury from 2015 that didn't completely heal. The Achilles slowly healed and I started running again by May, but then in June my right glute started to give me pain (again also an old injury). I continue to rehab it, but sometime in July 2018 I overstretched it and felt a pop -- likely a nerve in my back (again at the time I thought it was just a gluteal or hamstring tear).

It slowly recovered over the next few months, but never really got better. I tried running on several occasions, but every time I built up to about 5K the pain would get worse again. Things were getting better until February 2019, when again my pain returned. I decided to stop running entirely and focus on rehab. Luckily I found a physio that could figure out that it was likely my L5/S1 nerve route in my back that was causing all of my symptoms. It took a few more months of physio but by July I finally started running again. This time focusing on low distance, low frequency (2x per week, less than 5K). I also started biking again after taking most of the spring off.

While all of this has been going on, I've been dealing with bilateral shoulder issues. First it was my left shoulder, which is an issue that went all the way back to my Ironman training in 2015. It had gotten better, but in summer of 2017 it came back while training for the half. I was still able to swim volume but couldn't do any higher intensity work. I rmped up my training in Fall 2017, but then the pain got worse. Finally in January 2018 I went to physio. Things got better and by the spring I was swimming again. But my right shoulder started hurting in the early summer. In July I was throwing a ball (for some reason) and my rotator cuff really started hurting.  Things started to get better but I had lingering pain for months. I stopped swimming all together, and haven't consistently swam in a while. My shoulder was finally feeling better in Aug 2019, but then I fell off my bike and re-injured it. Not sure entirely what happened, but as of today I'm still rehabing it, setting myself back several months.

So here is a summary timeline of my injuries

Left shoulder - summer 2017 > summer 2018
Right shoulder - summer 2018 > present
Left glute - fall 2017 - spring 2018
Left achilles Feb 2018 - summer 2018, then September 2019 > present
Right glute June 2018 - summer 2019 (still ongoing)

I do feel that within a month or so I can be around 75% at least, with the hope to started training fully in January. Today is exactly 365 days from Barrelman in 2020, and that is my goal is get healthy again for that race. Training officially starts today, although it may take several months before I'm able to actually to train fully.
