A year of injuries - now 365 days until Barrelman 2020

I haven't written anything in over a year. It's been a tough go in regards to injuries. Everything started post Road2Hope in 2017, around Nov/Dec with some left glute pain. In hindsight, this was likely my sciatic nerve acting up. It led to my left leg tightening up, all the way to my Achilles. In February 2018 while training for Around the Bay my left Achilles went on me, a recurrence of an injury from 2015 that didn't completely heal. The Achilles slowly healed and I started running again by May, but then in June my right glute started to give me pain (again also an old injury). I continue to rehab it, but sometime in July 2018 I overstretched it and felt a pop -- likely a nerve in my back (again at the time I thought it was just a gluteal or hamstring tear).

It slowly recovered over the next few months, but never really got better. I tried running on several occasions, but every time I built up to about 5K the pain would get worse again. Things were getting better until February 2019, when again my pain returned. I decided to stop running entirely and focus on rehab. Luckily I found a physio that could figure out that it was likely my L5/S1 nerve route in my back that was causing all of my symptoms. It took a few more months of physio but by July I finally started running again. This time focusing on low distance, low frequency (2x per week, less than 5K). I also started biking again after taking most of the spring off.

While all of this has been going on, I've been dealing with bilateral shoulder issues. First it was my left shoulder, which is an issue that went all the way back to my Ironman training in 2015. It had gotten better, but in summer of 2017 it came back while training for the half. I was still able to swim volume but couldn't do any higher intensity work. I rmped up my training in Fall 2017, but then the pain got worse. Finally in January 2018 I went to physio. Things got better and by the spring I was swimming again. But my right shoulder started hurting in the early summer. In July I was throwing a ball (for some reason) and my rotator cuff really started hurting.  Things started to get better but I had lingering pain for months. I stopped swimming all together, and haven't consistently swam in a while. My shoulder was finally feeling better in Aug 2019, but then I fell off my bike and re-injured it. Not sure entirely what happened, but as of today I'm still rehabing it, setting myself back several months.

So here is a summary timeline of my injuries

Left shoulder - summer 2017 > summer 2018
Right shoulder - summer 2018 > present
Left glute - fall 2017 - spring 2018
Left achilles Feb 2018 - summer 2018, then September 2019 > present
Right glute June 2018 - summer 2019 (still ongoing)

I do feel that within a month or so I can be around 75% at least, with the hope to started training fully in January. Today is exactly 365 days from Barrelman in 2020, and that is my goal is get healthy again for that race. Training officially starts today, although it may take several months before I'm able to actually to train fully.
